Raising livestock in the Philippines

Most Filipino livestock is raised on small backyard farms, so a few good habits go a long way.

Carabao

The Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) runs dairy and breeding programs and can tell you about artificial insemination and crossbred carabao in your area.

Goats and sheep

Goats do well on small farms and steep land. Shelter them from rain on a raised, slatted floor and deworm on a schedule your veterinarian sets.

Hogs and poultry

Keep a fence and a footbath, limit visitors and never feed kitchen scraps with pork to pigs: these simple steps help keep African swine fever (ASF) and bird flu out.

Typhoon season

Move animals to higher ground before floods and keep feed and water stored safely. Our typhoon checklist has the full list.

Insurance

The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) offers livestock insurance; ask your municipal agriculturist how to enroll.
